‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s journey from injury table to scoring with Athletic Bilbao

Whenhe debut appearance the Spanish forward featured in the UK, an teenage representing the reserve team against German opponents at the English ground in fall 2015, he found the net. The second time he took the field in England, against Sunderland following that, he scored. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, sure enough, he repeated the feat. As he revisited to the northwest to face United at Leigh Sports Village in the 2017 season, he found the back of the net. A spectacular strike, as well. “In fact,” he remarks, “it’s a top-class goal in my career.” So Athletic did what was necessary: they substituted him.

“I was furious,” the Athletic striker admits, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. Our match against United and I performed well. They kept me out of the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, I was scoring goals, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about the Red Devils, the typical thing. I’m not certain the validity, but had they contacted me, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At the training ground, the city, the early training is about to start; post-session, the quick travel to Loiu and a further journey to the UK, this time to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on midweek. Uttering the name lights him up. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for the club, partly because of the pressures of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and lost against Arsenal and the German side in the continental stage. Yet, take in the big picture, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection from him.

In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by Manchester United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway surrounded by countless supporters after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. He’s now the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in ten years. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he says.

He considered it challenging enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. As the child of the ex-La Real star his father and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that nurtured Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. He signed for Athletic at seventeen but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he experienced a torn cruciate, the cut, a relegation and a call back before he could truly get a chance, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the European competition.

“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the top level but every phase you go through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his first game and early 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I tear my cruciate.

“A massive setback but I look back on it as a turning point because it forced me to alter the outlook. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices new to you. Previously I was casual, but I did the sessions and then head home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so do everything. Practice, prevention. Strength training. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. Every small aspect: do them.

“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. I look at photos of me before: my physique was slight. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”

Minutes are crucial. The striker moved upset in that year, in his early twenties, joining the second tier. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and should the time come the requirement appears in your position, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, it was a dream come true. The trophy success, European football, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. All the more so after the prior campaign which, sometimes, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
