Apex Legends' Niche Traversal Techniques Become Widely Accessible This Season

Respawn Entertainment have a special treat in store for Apex Legends gamers, arriving just in time for festive season. Enthusiasts of this game's super-slick traversal can rejoice to discover that an innovative traversal feature is being implemented when Season 27: Amped launches on November 4th.

Introducing Mantle Boosting

Named "Mantle Boosting" by the developers, this feature provides gamers a surge of propulsion when climbing over obstacles. As explained lead battle royale designer the design lead, Mantle Boosting has unofficially existed of the game for some time, usually referred to as "mantle jumping." But it's challenging for the average player, and is mainly used by pro gamers in Ranked Mode or tournaments. In this update, Respawn simplifies the process for everyone to execute these advanced movement boosts.

"Mantle Boosts existed in the game for a while, but executing it requires skill to perform and a player might not realize it [is in the game] without outside knowledge," Canavese explains. "Now including a Mantle Boost indicator so players can clearly identify the timing to trigger the high-octane movement ability, making accessible the feature and adding fresh strategies to play for a much wider base."

Why Opening Up Advanced Mechanics

What's the reason for making a previously obscure movement quirk accessible to everyone? Principal designer Josh Mohan explains developers aims for gamers to feel powerful — including ones who are new.

"[The playerbase] performs other crazy stuff like super-glides and tap-strafes, and we looked around at our competition, looked at what the community execute, and we wondered, 'How can we extend these capabilities to a broader audience?'" the designer clarifies. "Because right now, some of these techniques are somewhat awkward to access — you need to remap your keybinds and hit precise timings. We proposed, 'What if we create a more official implementation?'"

The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility

Mobility is largely the central theme in Season 27, with characters the gravity mage, the defensive specialist, and Valkyrie all getting enhancements to maintain them in motion. The cooldown period on her tactical ability has been decreased, and this skill will boost players into the air faster than it used to. Her defensive walls now include a roof and capability to provide movement bonuses to allies in range. However the spotlight is on aerial this Legend who's getting the most attention this season, with multiple tweaks implemented to make her more potent, quicker, and more lethal.

"In my opinion there's quite a consensus that Valkyrie's time is here," states character developer Ian Holstead. "Certainly that she's been top-tier in the past, but due to the addition of other characters, movement[-based] passives, and redeployment tools, it felt like she fell behind in current the game. This presented an ideal chance for us to revisit a bunch of aspects [of her kit] and sort of bring her back to her glory days."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To restore Valkyrie's relevance in current strategies, the developer says Respawn assessed all her skills and introduced some powerful changes. Her VTOL Jets have been upgraded, boosting velocity while airborne, and the jets themselves now recharge three times faster, allowing her to spend more time aloft. Now she won't be harmed from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to mark opponents who are hit from the missiles. Her squad redeploy ability — which lifts her entire squad skyward for redeployment or escape — requires reduced delay to fire up. She's also getting recently added perk choices that players can select to reduce fuel consumption, expand the spread of her Missile Swarm, or accelerate her ultimate takeoff time.

"Her jet pack now delivers on the pilot experience," he comments.

Olympus Improvements

Additionally, the only floating arena, this location, receives a mobility-focused overhaul, with major changes that expands bottlenecks and renders claiming the high ground more manageable. The developers state Apex Legends Season 27 focuses on giving players the resources they need to keep up with the competition.

"Really, we examined the game's fundamental nature as a movement shooter," explains lead Legend designer the lead.

Apex Legends Season 27: Amped launches Nov. 4 at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
