Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors

Board Resignation
The former official declared he would withdraw from public roles after legislative body made public his frequent messages with Epstein

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at OpenAI, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

He stated in a release that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and eagerly await observing their development".

The prominent academic, who once headed the Ivy League institution, announced on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Digital Correspondence

The newly public emails showed that the official communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of young people.

In additional comments, the technology organization expressed it accepted the economist's choice to resign.

"We value his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the company stated.

Legislative Background

This news arrives after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to approve a bill that would require the Department of Justice to make public its documents on Epstein.

The legislation will then head to the office of the White House for endorsement. The President has said he plans to endorse the bill, after modifying his position on the subject following objections from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of Epstein-related messages released by the legislative panel days ago included multiple prominent individuals in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any criminal activity by those people.

The messages showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often attempting to introduce the official to prominent international personalities.

Personal Response

After the messages were shared with the general audience, he said he took "complete accountability for my misguided choice to continue corresponding with the financier".

He continued that he hoped "to reestablish faith and mend bonds with the persons closest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; acting as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He presided over the institution from the early 2000s and remains a academic there. When stating his withdrawal from public commitments recently on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in the capital where Summers was a researcher, announced that the economist was no longer connected with the organization.

The former official joined the directorate of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
