Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the WSL team.

Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant boost to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

Securing the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be building momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
