The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will End... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

Now that Season 1 of the hit series reaching its finale—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get distracted by the rampant praise and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to force fed hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by audience chatter.”

“Better to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
